And you'll find that Oktoberfest isn't just held in Germany. Other cities around the world also hold Oktoberfests based on the Munich model.
Basically a beer festival, each festival begins with a keg of beer drunk by the mayor of Munich declaring, "O'zapft is!" – Bavarian for "hear!" Special Oktoberfest beers are prepared for the occasion, which is slightly darker and stronger in taste and alcohol, and are served in a one-liter tank called the Mass.
Traditionally, the first service is celebrated by the Prime Minister of Bavaria. Only a local Munich brewery has the right to serve this beer in a beer tent – a beer tent large enough to accommodate thousands of people.
The first Oktoberfest was held in 1810 in honor of the marriage of the heir to the Bavarian throne, Ludwig, to Princess Theresa of Saxony-Hildburghausen. The celebrations began on October 12, 1810, and ended on October 17 with a horse race.
Munich's Oktoberfest traditionally lasts sixteen days up to and including the first Sunday in October.
